Treating Nearsightedness

Myopia Control

In most cases, nearsightedness is simply a minor inconvenience and poses little or no risk to the health of the eye. But sometimes myopia can be so progressive and severe it is considered a degenerative condition.

At What A Spectacle we offer different services to treat, prevent, and slow the progression of nearsightedness. Dr. Ahumada fits specialty contact lenses that are designed to halt the progression of the condition in children and young adults, among other treatment options for myopia control.

Myopia has on the rise in all populations across the globe as the most common eye refractive error in both children and adults. Scientific evidence has proven that high amounts of nearsightedness are associated with glaucoma and other sight-threatening diseases. That is why at What A Spectacle we are trying to control myopia and limit the increase as much as possible.

How We Can Help

Orthokeratology

Although there is no known cure for myopia some treatments and management strategies can help restore distance vision. Also known as “corneal reshaping lenses”, ortho-k contact lenses are specially designed gas permeable contacts that are worn only at night during sleep. Ortho-k has been shown to slow myopic progression in children by 36% – 56%.

These lenses work to temporarily reverse the effects of Myopia by reshaping the eyeball while you sleep, allowing the wearer to experience clear vision the following day. In the morning, the lenses are removed and the wearer can carry on with their day – without the use of glasses or contacts!

If you have questions or concerns about ortho-k, schedule an appointment with Dr. Ahumada. She will be able to help you determine your candidacy, costs, benefits, and risks of the process.

“I'm so glad I switched to this optometrist. This provider goes above and beyond to make sure I leave happy. I have severe myopia and Dr. Michelle is able to correct my vision so that I can work close up and still be able to see to drive. My previous optometrist never got it right, I thought I was a high-maintenance patient until my first appointment at What A Spectacle. The office is modern with all the latest technology. If your current optometrist is ``just ok`` I suggest making a move. I wish I had met Dr. Ahumada sooner!”
